Treatments include:

  • Complementary therapy
  • Lymphoedema therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Therapeutic programme (for more information, see below)

For more information on the therapies above, please see our Services section.

While you are at your Outpatient appointment, you may also see your Community Palliative Care Team doctor or nurse for review if this is arranged in advance. You can also ask for an appointment to meet with a Chaplain or Social Worker.

Patients attending the Outpatient Service are always seen at their given appointment time to avoid any waiting. Most treatments take between 45-60 minutes. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Certain treatments may require removing some clothing but this is discussed before the treatment.

Transport to and from appointments is available if you need it. You can have a family member or friend attend with you.

Referral to the Outpatient Service

You can be referred to the Outpatient Service by your Community Palliative Care Team for one or or more of the services provided in the Outpatient Services.

Therapeutic Programme

The Therapeutic Programme in St Francis Hospice Outpatient Service is a 6-12 week programme for patients who do not need the full Community Palliative Care Service but whose symptoms can be helped with Complementary Therapy, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.

While you are attending the Therapeutic Programme, your GP will continue to look after all your medical needs.

The aim of the Therapeutic Programme is to assist you in managing your symptoms and allowing you to be as independent as you can be. When you attend the Therapeutic Programme, you will by assessed by each discipline involved in your care. A programme will be developed to meet your needs.

The programme provides:

  • A plan to help make everyday activities more manageable.
  • A relaxing environment to discuss any concerns you may have.
  • Advice and help to improve quality of life and manage symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness and anxiety.

When you complete the Therapeutic Programme you will be discharged from St Francis Hospice and a letter will be sent to your GP to inform him/her of your progress.
