The services provided are :

Complementary Therapy
(Reflexology, Aromatherapy/Massage, Indian Head Massage)
Reflexology - A type of foot massage. Each part of the feet and hands represents a different area of the body. This can be a lovely introduction to complementary therapy.
What is it good for? Relaxation, breathlessness, sleeplessness, constipation and boosting energy
Aromatherapy/Massage - A type of massage using essential oils.
What is it good for? Anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia, nausea, breathing, memory, digestion, boosting the immune system and muscle pain/tightness.
Indian Head Massage - A gentle massage of the head, neck and shoulders. Oil may or may not be used.
What is it good for? Headache, stiffness of the neck and tension; can help with hair re-growth and dry scalp.
Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a gentle but very specialised form of massage available from specially trained therapists.
What is it good for? Reduces swelling following cancer surgery and radiation therapy, provides pain relief and improves function of the swollen limbs.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists work with people to enhance independence and enjoyment of self-care, work and leisure activities. In Walmer Villa, specific interventions are offered to help people manage functional activities.

Symptom management - Fatigue, stress and breathlessness often limit engagement in and enjoyment of important activities of daily living. Your therapist will work with you to se achievable goals, adopt strategies and give relevant, practical advice about activities of importance to you.

Equipment clinic - This involves assessing for and prescribing small pieces of equipment that help with management of everyday activities.

Leisure and therapeutic activities - Your therapist can work with you and give you advice regarding leisure, social and relaxing activities that may be helpful for you.
Occupational therapists work with both individuals and groups.
Physiotherapy
The physiotherapy team in Walmer Villa is committed to improving quality of life by helping individuals to maintain their independence and gain relief from distressing symptoms. Treatments include:

Individual exercise programmes can help to strengthen weak muscles, ease stiffness and lead to increased mobility.

Provision of walking aids, e.g. sticks or frames.

Advice to carers on transfer and handling techniques in ways to maintain maximum comfort for the patient.

Management of breathlessness through different breathing techniques and postural advice. This can be done either individually or in groups.

Help with pain relief in a number of ways. Manual therapy and exercise are used in conjunction with pain-relieving modalities such as heat or TENS.

Prevention of falls by addressing problems with balance and coordination.
Your physiotherapist will do a full assessment and discuss treatment aims and frequency with you.
Medical Outpatients
A medical outpatients clinic is available to deal with specific palliative medicine problems. Appointments can be made by your GP or Community Palliative Care nurse.
