Who are occupational therapists?
Occupational Therapists are allied health professionals trained to degree level. They are recognised as expert in assessing and analysing activity and occupations that are problematic.
What does the occupational
therapy service provide?

Assessment of activities of
daily living, focusing on self-care, work and leisure activities. -
Education and advice about the management of symptoms around functional activities. Interventions take place with groups and individuals in relation to the management of fatigue, pain, stress and breathlessness.

Support and advice for carers.

Prescribed therapeutic activities and advice about leisure.

Assessment for specialised equipment and adaptations to assist with the management of everyday activities.

Home assessments, supporting patients who wish to return home or enjoy a visit home. This involves identifying equipment, modification or adaptation needs in the home to promote safety, comfort and independence.

How can I access occupational therapy?
Staff members working in Hospice Day Care, Walmer Villa Outpatient Clinic, St. Anne's In-Patient Unit and the Community Palliative Care Team can request occupational therapy on your behalf.
How does occupational therapy fit into my overall care?
Occupational Therapists work with the patient, their family and other Health Agencies to ensure the seamless delivery of appropriate care, advice and equipment where required. The occupational therapists' work is an integral part of the multi disciplinary team. At St. Francis Hospice, the occupational therapists liaise closely with community based occupational therapists.
