REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is a specialised form of foot massage
that is derived from the Chinese practice of acupuncture. The theory underlying this therapy is that different areas of the foot represent and are connected with the body’s internal organ system. By systematically putting pressure on these points, symptoms such as pain, constipation and sickness can be relieved.
In St. Francis Hospice, the pressure of the touch is adapted to the individual person. In many instances where the person is very ill, the reflexologists might choose to just have a session of gentle holding and massaging the foot, or hand. In a palliative care setting the reflexologists find that working the solar plexus gives great relief from emotional tension and induces a relaxation response. They find that working the spine clears the energy pathways and creates the body’s phenomenon of homeostasis, i.e. balance within its internal environment.
