Complementary Therapies MASSAGE

Massage is one of the oldest therapies in
existence. It was written about in 3000 BC and Hippocrates himself wrote that the way to health is to have a scented bath and oiled massage each day.

It is widely accepted that touch can relieve pain and distress whether it is a hug or a hand on the shoulder. Massage is a form of structured therapeutic touch, which can relax, relieve muscle tension, reduce anxiety levels, reduce blood pressure, boost the immune system and moisturise the skin. Massage involves the gentle rhythmic touch of the body.

The person has the choice of having a full body massage, seated massage on the massage chair, or having their hands, feet, back, neck or shoulders treated. They have the choice of not undressing completely if they so wish. In a Palliative Care setting the length of treatment may vary according to each person’s needs. The Therapist will avoid deep kneading strokes, cupping or hacking movements; the pressure used, in general, is much lighter. We treat each person as an individual, taking into account their medical and surgical history. Our aim is to try and create a safe haven for people where they can completely relax in a beautifully scented room with background music being offered according to the individual’s preference. The person may choose to speak or remain silent throughout the treatment.
