AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy is the use of essential
oils extracted from a wide variety of plants. These are very concentrated substances; the quantity used is measured in drops. Smell has always been one of the most powerful of the senses as it can be immediate, instinctive and individual. In a palliative care setting there are many considerations to be taken into account, i.e. if the patient is nauseated, does the smell of the oils make them worse? What memories does it evoke - positive/negative? The principal oils used in this setting are: rose, neroli, geranium, bergamot, orange, mandarin, sandalwood and lavender. The therapists find that it is not only the smell of the oils that the person enjoys, but also the healing touch of the massage. The oils are selected very carefully as it is essential that the person likes the scent of the oil being used. Aromatherapy therapy oils can be used in baths and vaporizers.
